Barcelona, 17 November 2022.

We are more than excited to share the extraordinary news of FIWARE’s book launch today at Smart City Expo World Congress 2022 in Barcelona (Spain) with the title “FIWARE4Cities”. Its fourth edition, which was presented for the first time at this international leading event for cities, is all about showcasing on a global basis how FIWARE helps cities to lift their Smart City strategies off the ground – but this time with more than 125 city deep-dives out of more than 300 city references from 30 countries. 135 running solutions and their respective city journeys towards a smart future provide a strong portfolio of what is possible using open data and open standards, based on FIWARE technology.

This new edition not only presents an unprecedented insight of cities into how they are using FIWARE and how they are realizing their objectives and required benefits, but it gives for the first time insights into how adoption can work across a country (e.g., in Spain or India) and how cities start sharing their solutions with others.

From the UK to Japan, from Belgium to India, from Argentina to the US, FIWARE is up and running in more than 300 cities worldwide. This book is not just another book, though. It is a special combination of hands-on information and best practices, real and running implementations, insights by thought leaders and specific trend statements, and last but not least a unique city index that allows you in an interactive mode to easily find the city you are interested in. This fourth edition comes with more than 25 new city deep-dives and even more new solutions, including Belgium (Leuven), Colombia (Alcaldía de Medellín, Duitama), Germany (Etteln, Heidelberg, Steinheim), Greece (Island of Naxos), Italy (Milan, Rome), India (Ahmedabad, Bareilly, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Kanpur, Kannur, Nagpur, Sagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Thoothukudi, Tumakuru, Visakhapatnam), Saudi Arabia (Madinah), Spain (El Prat de Llobregat, Ports de Balears, Provincial Council of Cadiz), and Sweden (Stockholm).

This book is also special as it lays out the first open source city use cases and solutions that can be shared. Selected cities have started giving open access to their specific Smart City solutions allowing other cities to reuse already existing solutions and avoid inventing the wheel another time (e.g., by sharing publicly their projects on Github) or inviting them for co-creation (e.g., in wider regions seeing cities working together on regional solutions sharing knowhow and resources).

By following and using FIWARE’s open common standards and technologies, the showcased cities demonstrate how to deliver state-of-the-art smart, digital, sustainable, and effective strategies and public services.

Many of the described solutions and platforms can additionally be found in FIWARE Marketplace which helps its users and their customers find the best innovative and open-source-based products and services. FIWARE Marketplace allows you to get easily informed and updated about further FIWARE-based products and solutions and find the right contact persons if you want to get in contact with one of the 200+ providers.

Today is a great day though: this fourth edition of the FIWARE Smart Cities book is already at its launch date a true guide to the world of cities and organizations working in Smart Cities, Smart Territories, eGov, Mobility, Tourism, Energy, Water, and Sustainability market with vivid examples to support dynamic city’s transformations as well as giving a helping hand in the technology pick and implementation strategy.
