FIWARE at the IoT Solutions World Congress 2016

Sep 29, 2016Ecosystem, Industry

FIWARE will be present at the IoT Solutions World Congress 2016 in Barcelona on the 25-27th October.
The second edition of this event is expected to gather more than 8,000 national and international visitors and will be focusing on IoT solutions in six dedicated areas: Manufacturing, Healthcare, Energy & Utilities, Transportation & Logistics, Innovation and Technology. Areas that are direct business targets for the FIWARE entrepreneurial community.

As we have stated before, Internet of Things, combined with information processing and Big Data services on the Cloud, is starting to enable a new breed of innovative Smart Digital Services. Within the IoT framework, FIWARE stands out as the Open Platform supporting the development of Smart Applications managing context information.
That points at the IoT Solutions World Congress as a highly strategic date, both regarding the maturity and continuous advancement of the Open Source technologies and the ecosystem that keeps expanding around them.
Our startups and developers, as well as by high level representatives, will be reinforcing the strong presence of the FIWARE Community within the event.

We have some highlights to be share in advance.

FIWARE will be in the Exhibition Area, booth C340. There, our technological experts and press team will be engaging with the visitors, spreading the voice about what we are offering regarding the evolution and commercial use of the Internet of Things. The IoT community is, in a way, part of the FIWARE ecosystem, and also the other way around.

Six different demos will be shown at our stand. The startups demoing their products and solutions will be:

  • Tera, with their project Beeta, a solution for energy savings.
Currently, the home energy automation IoT market is fragmented, making it difficult to understand which product would be the ideal to optimize energy usage in each situation. Beeta is a box with a thermostat, a sensor for electric consumption monitoring and PV storage monitoring hardware, linked to a user interface with detailed analytics and alerts. By informing users of how to manage their household electrics and encouraging a more responsible energy consumption, Tera estimates that savings of up to 200€ per client a year could be achieved.

  • Optimization of warehouse logistics with FIWARE-based robots by eProsima.
Specialized on high performance middleware, eProsima applies the Open Source model to their products and solutions. Their demo at the Congress will caught the eye of everyone passing-by: a robotic arm will be providing candies to the visitors. At the same time, it will show the potential that lies in the creation and implementation of middleware standards to inter-connecting systems and to solve common problems of interoperability.

  • Drone Delivery by Connect Robotics, which use drones for transportation and delivery of goods.
Aiming to take transportation “to the next level”, Connect Robotics focus on the transformation of the last mile delivery. Using hardware agnostic drones, this part of the process, from the distribution center to the final destination, becomes a completely autonomous process. The system advanced telecommunication capabilities guarantee collision avoidance for the drones, while offers a centralized air traffic controller and integration of all agents in a Delivery Management System.

  • CardioWheel by CardioID Technologies, which uses the steering wheel to control the health of the driver.
Using heart signals for health examining by employing sensors and wearearables, CardioID Technologies propose to pervasively monitor your heart, looking for arrhythmias and dangerous factors, like stress or drowsiness, and being used as well as a biometrical identification system. CardioWheel is a hardware and software system to process ECG signals acquired from the hands and though the steering wheel, customizing the in-car experience, while keeping tabs on signs of driver fatigue and any possible abnormal cardiac activity.

  • Babbler, a “smart seal” and end-to-end monitoring system for supply chains.
Babblers are small re-usable wireless devices. By sticking them, fixed with a magnetic holder or double-sided tape on the inside of a container or trailer door just before locking it, it’s possible to follow a shipment end-to-end, monitoring temperature and seal-status by simply using a smartphone, or through a long range radio option. The use of these “smart seals” could benefit shippers, carriers and customs, as it allows detecting and solving possible incidents earlier, reducing paperwork and liabilities, easing security inspections, find vulnerable steps in the transportation process, improve them and, consequently, improve the commercial relationship between the many different and usually far-off actors involved in an international shipment.

  • INSYLO, remote monitoring system of silos for the livestock farming
Currently, most of the farmers control the amount of feed available in the silos of their farms in a manual, inaccurate and risky way. The feed suppliers have to process the replenishment orders mostly by phone calls, lacking the data to optimize the delivery routes and production plans. With this affordable, easy to install, plug&sense solution, when the stocks reach a critical level, farmers receive an alarm in his mobile phones and send the replenishment orders by a simple click. The feed suppliers, having access to the stocks of their customers, can optimize the production plans and replenishment routes. INSYLO can reduce up to a 25% the logistics costs and CO2 emissions of the replenishment process and, in Europe only, the sector can save +2B€ each year.

testbeds2On the area dedicated to testbeds, another two solutions powered by FIWARE will be presented. These projects have been picked out as two of the best among all the participants in the Call for Testbeds competition, organized by the Congress. The two winning teams will have the opportunity to showcase their solutions in a prominent space, at the Testbed Area:

  • Adevice, with their water quality control demonstration.
The Smart Fountain solution developed by Adevice and powered by FIWARE has become a very well-known project among our community and one of the main assets for the digital transformation of Seville. It allows real-time monitoring of ornamental fountains, collecting and showing information and alerts to avoid any system malfunction, thus saving money through predictive maintenance. It combines industrial IoT technologies under a Smart City focus.
The actual implementation in the city of Seville integrates multiple devices with standards-based technologies, assuring interoperability between teams and systems from the different organizations that are involved in keeping the fountains and their water quality within optimal conditions. Thanks to the control panel and the alarms based on thresholds and trends, a malfunction that used to take several days to detect can be now be dealt in no more than a couple hours.

  • ETConcept with Fi-Sonic, presenting a solution that captures, processes and analyses the sound in a specific space.
FI-Sonic sound-capturing devices are capable of geo-locating, identifying and characterizing a set of different audio sources and events in the city. The project aims for cleaner sound environments in smart cities, developing the necessary low-cost technology to create a city-wide net of sensors and to achieve its goal by creating an urban monitoring system based on 3D sound capture, completed with audio analytics and immersive audio reproduction system.
An online portal with continuous information of sound levels, sound detection and identification of events  will be presented as part of the exposition testbed.

congress2FIWARE will be present at the Congress Area too, with a session titled ‘FIWARE: towards an open IoT-enabled Industrial Data Space’ (Slot: EU-7; 26th Oct at 12:45-13:30). The top level speaker will be Ulrich Ahle, reputed expert and thought leader in IoT-enabled Smart Solutions, member of the Board of the Industrial Data Space initiative in Germ and leader of the Industry 4.0 activities in Atos as VP of Manufacturing, Retail & Transportation Consulting and Systems Integration.

Being pointed out as one of the main actors in the growth of the Industrial IoT sector, FIWARE is raising awareness about the rich value proposition that has been assembled around and to fulfill the needs of the developers, companies, users and communities engaged within the IoT market, being part of it and pushing it to move forward.

In the days prior to the IoT Solutions World Congress, we will be updating and sharing our main outcomes and assets around the Internet of Things. Let’s meet there and stay tuned during its celebration, following our community channels to be updated about the even and being invited to share your own plans, highlights and thoughts about the Congress through our social networks, using #IoTSWC16 and #FIWARE.
