FIWARE is open source, helping cities to avoid vendor lock-in and protect their investment. FIWARE is the platform providing access to real-time context information describing what is going on in the city. It integrates components enabling to process, analyze and publish historic and current information in order to achieve a better management of municipal services and bring support to an Economy of Data.
TRANSFORMING CITIES INTO ENGINES OF GROWTH
Making a city “smart” means turning your city into an ICT enabler for innovation, economic growth and well-being. By adopting common standards and information models, cities can achieve this transformation with minimum impact, merging forces to build an ecosystem where they can connect and collaborate. This enables the creation of interoperable and portable solutions that can be adapted and replicated for the needs of each city, building a sustainable Digital Single Market for Smart Cities.
THE FIWARE’S OPEN APPROACH
The FIWARE open source platform is becoming the “de facto” standard adopted by cities and entrepreneurs. FIWARE’s open source nature allows platform providers to emerge faster in the market, activating the kind of competition and freedom of choice that are essential for innovation and growth.
- Avoid getting locked-in to particular platform providers
- Support to the implementation of replaceable Smart City solutions.
- Choose who will operate your applications and host your data.
- Be part of a market for cities large enough to attract investment by a larger community of developers and entrepreneurs thus fostering innovation, economy growth and creation of jobs.
- Develop and test Smart city applications in one city that can be ported and adapted to other cities, which means scale opportunities for developers and lower costs for cities.

FIWARE – EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT OF CITY SERVICES
- Calculation of standard KPIs based on gathered data enables benchmarking of services.
- BigData analysis of historic context information helps to extract insights for a better management of services.
- Operational dashboards help to monitor services in real-time.
- Exchange of data between vertical systems enable more powerful services.
FIWARE – DEVELOPMENT OF SERVICES BY THIRD PARTIES
- Real-time open data become the fuel of innovative services for citizens and local businesses.
- The city can provide a trustworthy data marketplace involving third-party data and applications.
- Third party applications are portable across cities.
- Innovative business models bring the necessary incentives to invest.
FIWARE is enabling a new generation of smarter applications which exploit large scale, real-time ‘context information’. Particularly, the NGSI version 2 API is aimed at making developer’s life easier, by providing a simpler but powerful RESTful API. Markedly, the combination of NGSI version 2 and harmonized data models enables to support portability at the application layer. As a result, a myriad of end-user applications can seamlessly work and interoperate in different scenarios within smart cities.
National Institute of Standards and Technology
FIWARE is a major contributor in a global coalition to create a shared Internet of Things-Enabled Smart City Framework that will identify pivotal points of interoperability, where emerging alignment on standards can enable landscape of diverse but interoperable smart city solutions. The coalition is led by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in a global partnership with the American National Standards Institute, the U.S. Green Building Council, the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning, the Italian Energy and Innovation Agency, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, and the FIWARE Foundation.
TM Forum-FIWARE Business Framework for supporting the “Economy of Data”.
FIWARE & TM Forum APIs have been integrated into an Open Source business framework which can work as the foundation for setting up dynamic marketplaces incorporating smart city and third party data based on which services from different partners can be developed, priced and monetized. The FIWARE Business Framework will help to create a solid basis for a creative and powerful Economy of Data.
Open & Agile Smart Cities Initiative
The Open & Agile Smart Cities (OASC) initiative brings together smart cities from across the globe. Promoting interoperability and the free flow of data within and between smart cities, the collaboration helps urban communities to access all the economic and social benefits that smart cities have to offer.
Seen from a developer’s perspective, one city alone is not a market large enough. A number of cities in several countries or a continent, adopting a minimal set of standards will form a sizable market on which developers can start investing.
There are currently 89 cities from 19 countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific who have officially joined the Open & Agile Smart Cities initiative.
Different FIWARE community members and mobile operators worldwide (with GSMA support) are starting to experiment the development of smart applications using the FIWARE NGSIv2 API and commonly adopted data models. As a result, valuable feedback can be obtained in order to refine them. The final aim is to contribute these data models to standards organizations, industry associations (particularly GSMA) or global community-driven efforts (schema.org).
Keys to the Smart City:
FIWARE is a key element in making a Digital Single Market for Smart Applications real, helping startups to come into market with new services at a faster and cheaper rate, creating new jobs and growth, boosting creativity and innovation. It also ensures that entrepreneurs can gain access to the technology platforms and Open Data necessary for the development of innovative applications and services.
Using the FIWARE technologies, developers can gather context information at a large scale and from many different sources, including the Internet of Things. Applications built upon FIWARE can easily process, analyse and visualize managed context information, thus implementing the smart behaviour of smart digital solutions and services, supporting an enhanced user experience.
