The Open Service Platforms ecosystems are a catalyser for economic opportunities and jobs. Europe is ready to lead such new technologies based on open platforms. The Industrial Internet will provide tremendous business opportunities for European industry, which will also secure and create jobs in Europe.
European industry needs a global level playing field in the Industrial Internet in order to exploit this potential. Europe needs to develop an open sustainable ecosystem around public, royalty-free and implementation-driven software platform standards that will ease the creation of Smart Applications in multiple sectors. Standards are essential to ensure interoperability of systems and portability of applications, realizing economies of scale in the Industrial Internet.
The European Commission has committed to support the FIWARE Community which is the most successful case lead by a European Public Private Partnership of an Open Platform and it comprises the most relevant individuals and organizations contributing to achieve this objective. FIWARE Community is not only formed by contributors to the technology (the Open Source Community working on the FIWARE platform), but also those who contribute in building the FIWARE ecosystem and making it sustainable over time. The FIWARE platform, which was created as part of the Future Internet PPP by the European Commission and industry. FIWARE has designed a common standard API for context information management to achieve the necessary interoperability of processes across sectors and thus to enable end-to-end scenarios where, for example, processes running in smart cities can interact with processes supporting smart cities or smart logistics.
Europe must strive to achieve a global leadership role in the emerging Industrial Internet and Open Service Platforms. Therefore, the EIF is opening a debate, focusing on the priority areas to achieve this objective for Europe:
- Drive Global Standards for the Industrial Internet
- Ensure a Reasonable and Harmonized EU Regulatory Framework
- Awareness Raising, Skills Development and Social Acceptance
- Foster Development of Platform in the Industrial Internet
A lunch debate will take place in Brussels (Belgium) this month, on January 24th, starting at 12:30, on the European Parliment Private Salon.
The appointed speakers are Ulrich Ahle (CEO of the FIWARE Foundation), Pearse O’Donohue (Director for Future Networks, DG CONNECT, European Commission) and Miguel Arias (COO, CARTO.COM), plus the introduction by Pilar del Castillo (MEP and EIF Chair).
