FIWARE Foundation and GIIC Partner to Advance Smart Technologies and Strengthen EU-India Cooperation

Berlin, October 9, 2025 FIWARE Foundation and the German Indian Innovation Corridor (GIIC) have signed a strategic partnership agreement to strengthen Global Innovation Bridges: Europe–India Partnership. The agreement was signed by representatives of the GIIC Board of Officers and FIWARE Foundation CEO at the German Indian Innovation Summit 2025, which took place on 6-7 October at Brandenburger Tor, Berlin, Germany.

The primary objective of the strategic collaboration between the two organisations is to further develop smart technologies and promote cooperation between Europe and India in areas such as open-source digital public infrastructure, data spaces, digital twins, and sovereign AI, based on the principles of openness, inclusivity, and sustainability.

Chandra Challagonda, CEO of FIWARE Foundation, commented:

“FIWARE Foundation is proud to partner with the German Indian Innovation Corridor to strengthen EU–India collaboration on Digital Product Passports (DPP) and other smart innovative technologies for energy, mobility, cities and other economic sectors. Together with UNDPI and UNDP, we aim to advance open-source digital public infrastructure, interoperable data spaces, and sustainable innovation for smart cities and industries”.

Upen Barve, Co-Founder of GIIC, added:

“Our strategic partnership with FIWARE unlocks new horizons for innovators across Europe and India. Together, we advance open-source digital public infrastructure, data spaces, digital twins, and sovereign AI — built on openness, inclusivity, and sustainability, collaborative innovation drives rapid and inclusive growth via identified strategic areas — while opening markets across Europe, India, and beyond. We share the same urgencies but different skills.

This agreement focuses on long-term collaboration to realize the following objectives:

  • Contribute to joint standardization activities in Germany, India, and globally, ensuring interoperability and alignment with international commons principles.
  • Explore and define pathways to sovereign AI based on FIWARE’s open-source philosophy, ensuring trust, transparency, and alignment with European and Indian values.
  • Evolve the collaboration towards establishing a FIWARE iHub in India as a long-term anchor for innovation, ecosystem growth, and replication.
  • Engage with stakeholders (government, industry, academia, and civil society).
  • Develop an ecosystem and explore opportunities for joint participation in EU, Indian, or bilateral programs and funding schemes.
  • Launch FIWARE training in India to empower developers, municipalities, and industry with the skills to build open, inclusive platforms and digital twins.

Within the framework of the strategic collaboration, GIIC launched the new project “German Indian – Open Innovation Initiative” focusing on AI and Digitalisation in Industries, advancing Climate Action, Sustainable and Smart Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Transport. It is a full-stack model — from strategic engagement and technical foundations to scaling, deployment, and monetisation. FIWARE Foundation became one of the core partners, providing the project with tech infrastructure based on FIWARE Open Source and Open Standards.
