Earlier this month, IMPACT Connected Car, a fantastic new acceleration program led by FundingBox and ISDI, and partnered by FIWARE, launched its first open call. And let me tell you, there’s an exciting amount of funding to be distributed. 2.1 million to be exact, and it’s equity free!

 

Over the next five years, the connected car is expected to disrupt the entire automotive ecosystem, as well as the customer market. IMPACT Connected Car aims to help SMEs and startups (that’s YOU!) to take advantage of this business opportunity.

 

But that’s not all. If selected, you’ll get the chance to learn from experts in business, technology, corporations, and funding. Lastly, startups will also have access to up to €60,000 per startup, equity free, in grants and up to €50,000 per startup equity free! Need we say more?

 

The current open call will be receiving applications from connected car startups and SMEs until January 10th, 2018 so be sure to APPLY as soon as possible!

Outbarriers, FIWARE Smart Society Challenge Award winners in 2014, have now launched an app aimed at supporting blind and visually impaired travelers and residents explore a city. Lauded as a “TripAdvisor for the blind”, the first app includes 40 essential venues in Granada, Spain.

The Alhambra and Granada was the most visited tourist destination in Spain in 2014, making this a key location for providing accessible tourist information for all visitors. Using FIWARE technologies and startup support, the app is able to provide contextual visitor information to travelers who are blind or visually impaired.

Outbarriers uses beacon-like technology at each of the forty venues so that as visitors approach the venue, their app alerts them that they are close to a site of interest and provides specific information, such as when to watch for a step into the venue, and where the toilets are located.
Local community members and other tourists are also encouraged to share their local knowledge and are able to add realtime information such as where there are potholes, temporary closures, or other specific accessibility issues that might need to be communicated to app users.

While the app documents 40 venues so far, an agreement between the Outbarriers app team and the 300+ members of the local business association means there is an ongoing commitment to work together and extend the app directory in future.

Outbarriers is an early success story of the approach FIWARE has taken to encourage app developers and civic tech projects to provide a new generation of services and products. Initially, Outbarriers was the third-place winner of the FIWARE Smart City Challenge in October 2014. The concept was tested with blind people and their feedback was included in the initial app design.

Outbarriers was then selected to participate in the FI-C3 FIWARE Accelerator Programme of the European Commission in September 2015. Funding and business model support from this accelerator enabled the app to reach the production stage release that has now been achieved.

Outbarriers has used FIWARE technologies since the challenge carried out in October 2014. The backend is hosted on FIWARE Cloud Lab, and uses the Orion GE as the system's backbone.

“Beacons are dumb and they only emit an universal unique ID,” explained Chema Robles, from Outbarriers. “So Orion is responsible for providing the right message depending on the context. We are also integrating PoI Proxy SE, a plug & play software component which works as an information aggregator about points of interest, which provides great added value and improves the user experience. In the latest beta of Orion, they have included an important feature, PubSub using WebSockets. Thanks to this important improvement, we will be able to easily connect volunteers with blind people, which is our the next milestone for Outbarriers.”

“Outbarriers is an excellent example of how FIWARE is being used to make a real difference to our cities and the way we move through and live in them,” said FIWARE Chief Architect, Juan José Hierro. “With the FIWARE platform of open APIs, our accelerator programs and partnerships with business leaders and academics, we are bringing a new generation of app developers into contact with cities and the business and technical expertise they need to make successful, production-ready applications.”

Here are the 20 ideas that will compete in the Smart Cities Challenge we launched and that will be held at Campus Party Brazil 2014 at the end of January 2014.

Campuseros that are in Sao Paulo those days will see, first hand, how these ideas have been developed and how they are improved. During Campus Party all the teams will receive coaching from FI-WARE experts and the winning applications will go home with their own FI-WARE application… and plenty of money for the victorious team to celebrate :)

Smart Cities finalists

Smart Zity

Alberto Martin Alcubierre, César Álvarez Jiménez, Daniel Prol Martín-Ambrosio, Pepe Vila Bausili and Alejandro Céspedes Vicente from Spain.

The idea is to give cities the opportunity to connect their public infrastructure (such as lights, fountains, giant screens and other elements) with citizens, giving them the ability to interact with their environment. Through the use of FI-WARE hashtags the cities that use this technology will turn FI-WARE into "trending topic".

Sparky App

Finding parking in large cities is a nightmare. The Sparky team is building a mobile application and a hardware device to help parking owners share their spaces while not in use and help drivers find a short or long-term parking place.

Quick Parking

QuickParking is born from a very common problem in cities today: managing public parking. Searching for empty parking spaces is a tedious task that takes a lot of time, resulting in decreased productivity for businesses and increased pollution in our cities. The application allows the citizen to quickly search and find a vacant spot. 

Smart Auto Parking

Carlos A. Albarrán Díaz de León, Cristina G. Escalante Minakata and Israel Tamayo Ricardez from Mexico.

Smart Auto Parking presents an autonomous system for street parking and registration control by using mobile technology, NFC and Smart Cams. This project could eliminate the use of staff for parking control and expensive hardware such as classic parking meters through automatic payments and fines. The project also facilitates direct payment by users and collection of payments by the city.

VASEC – Value Added Security and Safety Services for Transport

VASEC handles security issues associated with road transport and how users are informed by the respective information services of the city in regards to the possible danger zones and optimal route planning by avoiding these areas.

Based on the motto "Intelligent Health when we want, when we need it and wherever. Thanks to sensors and information stored in the cloud, this system gives much more secure and personalized medical attention. The main goal is to reduce operating costs, improve management of large volumes of data and establish a structure of private security in information management. These advantages can benefit both governments and healthcare organizations.

Social Market

Rethinking communities with the use of social media can be an opportunity to promote interaction between citizens and their environment. This platform allows users to share information, opinions… and to be rewarded with credits for their feedback. These credits become bonds that citizens can use to invest in their community (discounts, free use of public spaces, etc.) Active user interaction is the key point.

Urban M

Urban M is a project that provides an alternative, healthy and ecological means of transportation based on electric and folding bikes that incorporate sensors that contain useful user-data that will be made public to all users. Such as public fountains, etc.

La Urbo Project

The objective is to give people the opportunity to express their feelings about the city in which they live, or even a city they are visiting. This way, users can share their feelings on issues such as fear, insecurity, satisfaction, joy, boredom, disgust, calm, excitement, etc. These feelings will be pinpointed, which means that each city will have a map of feelings and impressions of its inhabitants.

Smart App City

SmartAppCity is an app for smartphones and tablets aimed at local authorities. The application meets all city services: promoting the commercial sector, generating value for citizens and tourists, and improving the quality of life.

WeCOLLECT seeks to encourage innovation in the area of​​ waste collection management from homes to treatment plants. This way the main stakeholders (governments, municipalities, waste management companies, industrial companies, NGOs and citizens) have a better level of understanding of the functioning and the processes involved in waste collection.

Paprika

This project provides information on public transport to smartphone users through augmented reality. This app allows users of public transportation to plan their daily commute and spend less time at bus stops, making it public transportation reliable and convenient.

Chaos

Şule Yücel, Burak Hançerli, Recep Çağrı Yüzbaşıoğlu, Enes Yüncü and Mesut Yukarıdere from Turkey.

The CHAOS system is formed by a series of cameras placed in various directions that processes images and converts them into data on the number of vehicles passing through an intersection, road or avenue, recording the average speed or even regulating signalling systems that function during a traffic jam. The video images are processed in real time and cameras can work in different lighting conditions.

Apparkart

Marco Vereda, Javier Montaner, Gabriel Herrero and Anne Braun from Spain.

ApparKart is an app that tells you where there is an empty parking place near you. The application detects your current location and proposes areas close to you which probably have an empty parking place. The addresses listed are captured by through active sensors embedded in parking meters. The system also provides a map to get to the suggested area. With this application citizens could save time, money, energy and, of course, reduce air pollution. Another plus: the application is free.

FI-Guardian

Marcos Marconi, Viviane Lessa, Leonan Carvalho and Miquéias Faria from Brazil.

Adverse circumstances such as natural disasters are more and more common worldwide. With proper warning people in Smart Cities can be well informed of these risky events, providing a safer environment for them. The objective of the application is to help intelligent cities become more resistant, aiding in communication, orientation and warning of adverse circumstances such as natural disasters. The solution consolidates tracking system data, centralising information from different sources, and carrying out customisable and intelligent remote sensor analysis, communicating risk events to citizens before they occur.

Spring is an innovative project that aims to interconnect people, machines and cities, gathering data and providing it to users by geolocating environmental information.

SmartTraffic

Mateo del Río Lostal, Carlos Vicente González and Alfonso Escriche Martínez from Spain.

SmartTraffic is a project that aims to improve traffic with a network of sensors and devices that allow for a more comfortable ride, increase safety and efficiently manage resources. In addition, SmartTraffic recognizes special vehicles and assigns them a priority, facilitating their passage by modifying traffic signals. The system also can detect unexpected events such as accidents.

TagTag City

Geoffroy Simon, Olivier Poulaert, Maxime Dewelle, Kenneth Verhelpen, Natalia Vicente, Julie Delande and Michael Lecerf from Belgium.

TagTagCity lists the historical buildings of a city, cultural points of interest and other information, including an attractive description of each one. With customizable buttons, you can add photos, links to Wikipedia, Facebook, etc. In addition to promoting the cultural and historical heritage of the city, TagTagCity can also help stimulate the economy through geolocation: local goverments could choose to offer advertising space to private companies in TagTagCity, allowing users to easily find shops and restaurants while having access to discounts.

City Brain

Sergio Daniel Chamorro and José Vinicio Freire Rumazo from Ecuador.

Most countries around the world have specific areas of interest that have a high population concentration and also are points of interest for visitors. This concentration poses great problems for parking cars. This application will allow tourists and residents to search upcoming events such as festivals, art exhibitions and/or live concert while providing information on nearby parking lots and their availability and prices.

FI-WARE Widgets Smart Hub (Smart Box)

Álvaro Romero Izquierdo, Francisco Javier Herrero Sánchez, Raul Herrero Sánchez, Rubén Ortiz, José Ignacio Dominguez Simón and Daniel Castro García from Spain.

The main objective is to "sensorize" cities, obtaining a huge source of useful information that consumers can check from their homes through a tv screen and a remote control. This team won first prize at the FI-WARE hackathon in Santander.

Smart Business & Industry finalists

Cloud Industry 2.0

Nixon Javier Rondon Rey and Leonardo Elbano, from Venezuela.  

The system shall provide real-time monitoring of all business needs (water, electricity, heating, gas, security, health), and store the data on record, enabling automation of processes. It proposes a modernisation of any given company based on self-sustainability, such as the integration of photovoltaic systems that collect solar energy. Depending on the ratio of energy consumed by the company (from the energy produced by renewable energy systems) the system will automatically take the necessary steps to improve power consumption, either by disconnecting the company 's Mains (in the case of excess production in self-sustaining systems), providing energy to the local power grid or by connecting to the electricity grid for the acquisition of the difference in energy required for proper operation.

SmarTaxi

SmarTaxi collects data about the location and condition of a vehicle in real time. The data is stored, processed and reaches the driver through Internet. This way the driver is able to access and view a "heat map" with colours that indicate areas of greatest concentration of potential customers. The only requirement is that the driver has a smartphone or tablet with Internet connection. This project that originated from the Polytechnic University of Valencia is intended increase taxi drivers income and improve city services.

Wadjet

Wadjet is presented as an enterprise solution for systematic monitoring of field operations within a company, oferring SMEs a cost-effective solution to acquire better control and visibility of their field operations. The application is particularly suitable for fleets of vehicles and workforce management. For example: users will be able to monitor location, driving behaviour, speed, etc.

Ombudsman Office 2.0

Ombudsman Office 2.0 aims to bring the government to citizens / businesses through an online service that promotes social participation, transparency and cooperativeness between them. O² is a service that will facilitate communication between citizens and government, the customer and the company. The submission of suggestions and criticism and/or reporting to public and private agencies are just some of the options it will offer. This service will allow companies and customers to work together to solve questions about city problems (in the case of a government) or about business matters (in tjhe case of companies).

Shelfz.com

Florian Klemt from Germany.

Shelfz.com is targeted at owners of shops and boutiques around the world and aims to connect their "physical" shops to the Internet. With it the products on the shelves will be represented and can be searched for online. An analysis of continuous data will recommend the most popular products and mark the location of the nearest store where they can be found. The owner may also benefit from the consumption data to give customers the best service and, thereby, increase his sales. For example, if someone finds an interesting item they want to purchase, he can see how to get to the store where the item is sold (with direct access to the map from their phones) and submit a check-in. After the check-in, the owner of the business will receive real time information on how to attend such customers from the moment they walk through the door.

Shake&Go

In the world of companies that need a better form of communication (invoices, sales orders, etc.) a large number of tools such as email, FTP, etc. have been created. All such documents and materials that are shared travel from one place to another. Shake & GO is an "FPS" (file processing as a service) that unites all wireless services using an app so SMEs can communicate in a simple way with partners, suppliers and clients. This can create an interesting ecosystem where it is easier to implement the transmission of documents between two points.

SmaHeater, the smarter heater

The increase in electricity costs is a major concern for homes and offices. One of the main reasons is the use of heaters. These devices usually do not take into account outside temperature changes in real time and, therefore, use 100% of the energy available. SmaHeater proposes an innovative idea: use temperature sensors that measure indoor and outdoor temperatures and their integration with heaters as a solution for energy saving. This project can save a lot of energy in offices and improve district heating system in restaurants, hotels and in homes.

Context

Félix Joel López Salcedo and Julio Manuel García Martín, from Spain.

Context is a start-up that offers solutions based on the exchange of data through Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) sensor network services. Its concept is simple: companies interested in these services will be marked by these sensors and will be in constant contact with the user via the app. In turn, the client will benefit from the sensors by being able to get the information he needs or to shop. For example, a user checks the app and see products from different brands that he finds interesting. When he clicks on any product he will get more details and options, such as adding products to a personal collection, see which friends have it in their collections or buy it, either online or by locating through GPS which is the closest stores that sell it.

Kituris

Edwin Marcelo Llauca Guallpa from Ecuador.

KITURIS is an integration platform and service with tourist information on hotels, resorts, restaurants, museums, attractions and more. Users can view the description of the location, services, special offers, address, access map, representative images, virtual 3D rides, etc. KITURIS recommends attractions in the form of notifications according to the location of the end user.

AmiCO

Ignatev Dmitrii, Kestutis Januskevicius and Dani Samer Bashou from Russia, Demark and Spain respectively. AmiCO is a GPS voice navigation system. With it you will be able to avoid distractions and eliminate the need to keep an eye on the screen while driving. A very intuitive, constantly updated navigation device.

 

MyCity4Me

Jesus Martin Gonzalez, Emiliano Bernués, Carlos Fernandez Bayona and José Mª Saldaña from Spain.

The goal of the proposed service is to improve daily relations between citizens and administrations, and organizations and companies, in order to jointly promote economic growth, leisure and culture. The proposal consists of a platform that allows the publication of some special, limited offer deals, offered by small companies. These deals can be also published by bars, restaurants, museums, theatres, gymnasiums, swimming pools, etc… Some examples: "Wine and skewer 1 € from 13h to 14h", "2×1 theatre tickets from 17h to 19h" or "Special discount 20% off Shoes Panama Jack from 17h to 21h."

SmartAdStore

Carlos Adalberto Albarrán, Cristina G. Escalante and Israel Tamay, from Mexico.

The main objective of this project is to apply intelligent mobile ads and electronic coupons. Thanks to these listings customers could get what they need almost instantly. This technology will be accessible to anyone who wants to open his sales and marketing system to a wide unexpected range of new customers.

Interact

Eurípides Petrakis, Stelios Sotiriadis, Kostas Stravoskoufos, Alexandros Preventis, Spyros Argyropoulos and Ioannis Pappas from Greece.

Interact is a project that unites motion sensors with gesture recognition. The basic idea is to allow people to use their hands to express themselves. This could be especially useful for different users (social networks) and people with special needs (e.g. hearing and speaking impaired people). The application would interpret up to 200 gestures and hand signals (e.g. “forgiveness”).

Smart Customer Support

Derick Leony and Victor Guerra from Spain and Austria respectively

 

This proposal aims to help SMEs improve the efficiency and performance of the customer service of their company. The application will use semantic technologies and machine-learning algorithms to analyse email queries sent by clients and automatically resolve them. In addition, Smart Customer Support will generate reports that allow further research and solutions given to customers of the company. In all it will provide valuable feedback for continuous improvement in business processes.

 

Galvyas

João Vieira, Débora Reis and Fábio Correia, from Portugal.

The idea focuses on sensors that allow us to look at the field from crop to harvest. The app sends the information being monitored, and data on soil or environment moisture, temperature and hours of sunshine/intensity, and so on. The user can control the situation remotely and take action, create alerts or share information of crop evolution with other users.

Appetitoo

Ottavio Sgrosso, Ivan Paudice, Marco Vladovich and Emilio Reppucci from Italy.

Appetitoo is a web platform that allows restaurant owners to communicate with their customers. Some of the features included in the app are: table reservation, ordering, promotional flash sales, events, opening times, reviews, multilingual menu, etc…

Carbon Control

Shane O’Sullivan, Darragh Kirby, Bill Craig and Frank Murray from Ireland.

The app can be used by SMEs to measure their carbon emissions (as well as other emissions of greenhouse gases) and also helps them to reduce their emissions through the creation of a Management System of Energy, which is specific to the size of the organisation. This saves organisations the cost of having to resort to outside consultants and experts to help in this area.

Voice Personal Consultant (VPC)

Tatiana Orlova and Yuri Orlov, from Ireland.

Communication from person to equipment requires user-friendly interfaces. Most of the attendees for voice work in closed form and automatically. Personal Voice Consultant (PVC) is a personal assistant that works thanks to voice recognition. Briefly, PVC is similar to Siri – assistant staff – but differs from others by the client, since it is possible to customize it.

FOODLOOP – Save it all

Christoph Müller-Dechent and Maria Rosario Trillo-Rivas from Germany.

FoodLoop offers the food industry supply chain and sustainable optimization solutions. Users can automatically commercialize high-quality fresh products, in real time and with lower prices as expiration dates approach so they can avoid waste and reduce costs. Consumers get offers directly to their mobile phones. The entrepreneurs maximize sales revenue while minimizing the loss of perishable products, and provide more affordable fresh food by offering discounts, special offers, etc….

FoneSense

Christian Ryder, Ireland.

FoneSense is a new mobile marketing platform that agencies can use to attract customers to the growing mobile advertising market. It uses the audio on smartphones and pays end users – smartphone owners – a reward every time the phone rings and the jingle is used. As a result, it provides advertising agencies a new channel for very targeted advertising as well as a solution to one of their biggest headaches: how to attract new consumers by moving away from traditional channels and increasingly using mobile media to entertain. Advertisers can reach their target audience through a mobile-telephone device that meets all their needs and will also provide them with detailed statistics regarding the use of their campaign.
