Wise Town

TeamDev, founded in 2008, mixed its software skills with the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) competencies to create tools and products able to support vertical markets problems in daily tasks and predictive analysis problems. During the years TeamDev doubled the effort to put these skills in two vertical sectors: agriculture, with the Agricolus ecosystem, and smart cities with WiseTown. Even in the evident difference of these two dominium, the common denominator is a high impact of the data analysis.

Our Research and Development team is composed by smart cities experts, full stack developers, User eXperience experts and data scientists.

Goals and challenges

WiseTown stands for “Web Information Streams Enhancer for your Town”. The goal of this solution is to collect information from different streams to identify the issues that affect the city in several areas: urban renewal, garbage collection, public safety, transportation, social services and environmental problems. In addition, real time analysis is accessible by creating a “Situation Room” to manage city events or emergencies. WiseTown acts in three steps:

. Acquire: Data from different sources (portals, social networks, mobile apps, sensors (IoT) and open data)

. Organize: Information from a comprehensive knowledge base.

. Use: organized data to deliver (one-to-one feedback, geographic analysis for events and emergencies, decision support systems, real-time management and open data)

WiseTown is more than a single web application, it’s a whole ecosystem that offer, other the issue management functionalities, other applications and modules to:

  • Perform analytics of the town issues and other infromation in order to improve the real time event management and future urban planning;

  • Act as a situation room for real-time events management;

  • Create a participative environment where citizens and town managers can discuss city development

The choice of FIWARE

WiseTown ranked as one of the final top project in Finodex Accelerator due to it’s Open data and open standards (Open311, OpenAPI) usage.  Thanks to the Fiware initiative our team has been involved in the Fiware Mundus initiatives as the GCTC Tech Jam in Washongton DC and the GCTC in Austin where we participated togheter one of our early adopters, City of Perugia.

 The use of FIWARE technology

WiseTown collects information from several data sources and WISE orchestrator manages this process: the module that interacts with the social connectors, the external APIs and the others data sources.

In this phase the orchestrator, uses FIWARE Orion Context Broker to connect the platform with the CKAN based open data, NGSI to connect IoT sensors feeds and uses Orion notifications to feed the APIs exposed for the integration with other software. WiseTown engine analyses and ranks data then it aggregates them. It is also responsible for assigning the ownership of the information to the right office.

When data are acquire and well categorized WiseTown starts its core work: management and analysis of the problem reports. Wise Engine is still responsible for the workflow of the reports while Orion Context Broker dispatches the information to the user interface, the GIS environment and Cosmos.

All the processed information are ingested in FIWARE Cosmos thanks to the Cygnus connector.

The most valuable part of the platform is the information it collects about the reports and their management: supervisors of the platform will perform geographical analysis thanks to the ArcGIS Online geoprocessing capabilities and pattern analysis with the business intelligence functionalities of FIWARE Spago B-I GE.

Benefits and accomplishments

The final goal of WiseTown adoption allow the cities to:

  • Monitor in a single process human generated and IoT generated information

  • Generate a valuable database, connecting heterogeneous systems, of information for urban planning

  • Engage citizens to improve the city and providing them real time feedback on city issues

  • Save management costs avoiding waste of human resources reducing:

    • The time to resolve proposed issues

    • The time to send the issue to the right person in   the municipality

    • The time to manage issues thanks to the algorithms that remove/aggregate redundant issues
