Deep Dive: Smart Energy
Digitalising Energy Systems and Operations: The Role of Aggregators and Digital Twin
Digitalisation has become a driver in the utility sector. Why is this so important in 2021 in particular? Whether it’s about integrating decentralised renewable energy sources, activating and unlocking the flexibility to complement the increasing variability in the system, enabling consumers to choose the services that fit their needs, or helping them become active participants in the energy system, digitalisation is key to keep increasingly decarbonised, decentralised energy systems running in a stable and affordable fashion.
From a utility standpoint, it allows them to monitor the system, to determine where there’s pressure and to procure the services and solutions that they need in order to keep the system running. There are a wider variety of service providers that the customer may choose to interact with and they need equal access conditions as the suppliers. The new European Electricity Directive creates some clarity in that direction.
The first part of this event will focus on the first one, aggregators. As an electricity grid participant, the aggregator tracks companies’ consumption and transmission system operators’ requirements in real time. The aggregator provides uninterrupted grid balancing to optimise energy use and pays its customers for making their electricity available.
The second part of this deep dive session will focus on the role of Digital Twin in transforming energy systems. An important factor enabling a smarter management of the sector’s energy resources, the concept allows electrical operators to manipulate the conditions of digital assets for scenario planning without interfering with the operation of the physical asset.
